What's the public's interest in the design of private buildings? When the terms are very subjective and the architect is prestigious, the going gets dicey. Design review can work only if collaboration can take place. There are always more ways to interpret the design problem. The Colman Tower is a case in point.
The parking lot behind the Colman Building near Pioneer Square is now a prime piece of real estate in a cleaned up neighborhood along Western Avenue. Triad Development wants to build the Colman Tower, a 13-story office building, on the long-neglected site. After a couple of turns directed by the downtown design review board, a preliminary design by Weber + Thompson seemed to be headed for approval.
