Design's ultimate clients, the users, are too often forgotten

  • Philip Thiel has made a career out of connecting architectural means and social ends.

    • Architects are typically surrounded by abstract sketches, computer images, orthographic drawings and glossy photo spreads on the walls.

    What’s missing in these pictures? People, of course. Even the photos show unoccupied buildings. After design and construction are over, the client’s bottom line can be tracked and the number of images in glossy magazines counted. But who accounts for the experiences of the users, the people who visit or depend on the building every day?
