AIA Project of the Month: Roxbury Estates delivers high design on a limited budget

Along Roxbury Avenue Southwest, a major arterial, the vertical dimensions of the Roxbury Estates buildings are emphasized with features like brackets and two-story bays. But on 24th and 25th streets, the shed roofs are low and the presence along the street minimized, to satisfy neighborhood demands for a low profile.

Habitat for Humanity widens the circle of home ownership, putting hundreds of thousands of families into their own homes every year. But the nonprofit organization, with more than 2,000 affiliates in the United States, is not known for exploring the cutting edges of architecture.
