A spirited public debate is underway in Tacoma concerning the future of locally registered historic districts. The catalyst was the city council's recent adoption of a resolution that directed the Tacoma Planning Commission, in coordination with the Landmarks Preservation Commission, to explore whether a moratorium on the nomination and designation of new local Tacoma Register (TR) Historic Special Review and Conservation Districts is warranted.
Tacoma currently has nine historic districts, including four that are listed on the TR, the last of which was designated in 2011.
