Talking History: City honors historic Ballard chili parlor

Last month, the city of Seattle issued a proclamation declaring Sept. 30 as “100 years of Mike's Chili Parlor Day” in Seattle.

Mike's Tavern and Chili Parlor was founded in 1922. Today the business operates in an unimposing 2,160-square-foot art deco style building at 1447 N.W. Ballard Way that has been its home since 1940, when the building was constructed. The property has sat pretty much unchanged since construction, even as the surrounding built environment has modernized and evolved drastically from being largely an area of single-family homes to the location of the Ballard Blocks shopping center.
