Andrew Bergh:Shopping trip turns into trouble for elderly couple

They had never been so humiliated or embarrassed.

Following their arrest for retail theft from a home improvement store, William and Elizabeth Reynolds were treated like common criminals. Protesting their innocence, the Illinois couple hired a criminal defense lawyer, rejected all plea bargains, and was later acquitted by a Cook County jury.
