Airport saves money with heat exchangers

  • Sea-Tac Airport officials plan to build another plate-and-frame heat exchanger to help lower the cost of heating and cooling the airport's expanded terminal.

    The Port of Seattle installed this plate-and-frame heat exchanger in 2001, during the last energy crisis. At one point, the airport paid $1 million in a day for electricity.
    IT WAS DECEMBER 2000, the height of the energy crisis, and Sea-Tac Airport's electricity bill was not pretty.

    “We paid $1 million for electricity for one day,” said Doug Holbrook, the port's manager for utilities and business management.
