Deepening the Columbia, blast by blast

    What looks like one big blast is actually several small blasts going off in sequence.

    SIRENS on a blast platform floating on the Columbia River near St. Helens, Ore., begin screeching. It's a signal that crews are about to set off another round of explosives nearly 60 feet below the surface of the river.
