Startup Hall

The second floor of the University of Washington's Condon Hall has been renovated to house Startup Hall.

Startup Hall was established in partnership with UW to help connect local innovators and investors.

The hall was built in the 1970s. Now the 21,000-square-foot space has an open layout with collaborative workspaces, meeting rooms and plywood “phone booths” that provide private areas to work.

The plywood phone booths play a key part in the design. Plywood cubes are placed between structural columns to separate the central common areas and meeting rooms from shared workspaces, while maintaining the feel of an open environment. Non-structural elements were removed to expose the concrete structure.

Two offices were turned into a double-height lounge with a gaming center and bar. The snack hub, as opposed to a traditional kitchen, has counter seating, vending machines and a coffee center.
