OLYMPIA -- Last year showed only minimal growth in the tourism industry in Washington state over the previous year, according to a study released last week by the state Office of Trade and Economic Development. Visitor spending reached an estimated $10.8 billion in 2001 compared with $10.6 billion in 2000.
"It comes as no surprise that visitor travel has slowed given the sluggish economy both regionally and nationally," said Peter McMillin, managing director of the Office of Trade and Economic Development. "We are optimistic that when the economy begins to grow again, tourism will follow."
