Coughlin Porter Lundeen announced the following promotions; Jackie Sempel, Ben Frizzell, Eric Dixon and Andrew Ayling have been promoted to associate principal; Marie Ternes and Jason Whitney are now structural associates; Bart Balko has been promoted to senior civil project manager; Nick Jacoby is now a structural project manager; and Ryan Goodwin is now a civil project manager.




Sempel is recognized by project teams, both internally and externally, for her leadership skills. She has been very involved in development and training and has been a central figure at the firm's civil group's Wednesday Lunch and Learn sessions to the highest level of engagement witnessed in years. She's is also a driving force behind the Employee Engagement Task Group.
Frizzell was an intern at Coughlin Porter Lundeen while attending Seattle University. Today, he specializes in education and multi-unit residential projects. Recent successes include Enumclaw High School, the new Bethel High School, Hobson Place, and three projects in the Esterra Park Development. He's also been involved in renovation projects including Queen Anne Exchange and PaliHotel Seattle. He has developed great relationships with affordable housing providers Mercy Housing Northwest, Community Roots Housing, and others, and volunteers with the Housing Development Consortium.
Dixon has a broad portfolio of office, multi-unit residential, research laboratories, as well as PreK-12 and higher education projects. He was raised in Eastern Washington and graduated from Washington State University before joining Coughlin Porter Lundeen 16 years ago. He serves as a leader in the structural design of the Microsoft Campus Modernization project. Internally, he's also helped integrate processes and programs into the workflow of the structural group.
Outside the office, he is a champion of NAIOP's annual Community Enhancement event.
Ayling has led the design of some of Coughlin Porter Lundeen's largest projects, including the massive Microsoft Campus Modernization project, and others in the office and multi-unit residential markets. He's a project manager, an advocate for mentorship and continued learning, and the firm's in-house master of concrete design and code.
Leading Coughlin Porter Lundeen's internal concrete training program, Ayling has implemented a more formal approach to continuous learning. Last year, he coordinated 27 biweekly sessions, and empowered other staff members to teach sessions.
Ternes is a project manager and gives much time and talent to helping shape the future landscape of the firm and local AEC. She helped found Coughlin Porter Lundeen's Women's Leadership Group four years ago, and then the Employee Engagement Task Group. Outside the office, she co-chairs ULI Northwest's Young Leaders Group and has participated on multiple panels with CREW Seattle and NAIOP. Most recently, she helped establish the Why Not More Women series with GLY Construction.
Whitney joined Coughlin Porter Lundeen an intern and has built his career here. Today, he's a project manager, mentor, and details expert. He's currently responsible for several large, complicated projects. His knowledge extends to various structural systems and materials, including mass timber. He's achieved recognition as a thought leader in that growing community and serves as a valuable resource for clients and partners, as mass timber projects gain momentum in the Northwest.
Balko has compiled an impressive list of project successes in his 20-year tenure at Coughlin Porter Lundeen. He began his career at Coughlin Porter Lundeen after graduating from Washington State University with his master's degree. Today, he manages the firm's two large Meta-Facebook projects in Redmond as well as a Microsoft campus expansion project.
Jacoby's portfolio includes multifamily, healthcare, and higher education projects. He's known for an unwavering positive attitude, and keeping a level head under pressure and adversity.
Goodwin has been a key player in some of Coughlin Porter Lundeen's most complex and sensitive projects. Projects like Cougar Mountain Middle School in Issaquah, Bellevue 600, West Main, and many others. He has also established a standout relationship with City of Bellevue officials, especially as they drafted and implemented new code.




Hargis Engineers announced the promotion of two professionals into their leadership team, and the recognition of two new associates. Levi Lynn and Suje Anton have been promoted to senior associate. Bradley Bloedel (mechanical) and Irina Susorova (energy services), join the associate team.
Lynn, a security and telecommunications specialist, has contributed program leadership to support Hargis' international retail fulfillment and high-technology clients. Leading enterprise security programs throughout North America. Anton brings forth continuity to Fortune 100 and 500 operations. Bloedel, a 2015 Hargis intern, provides project leadership across public and privately developed projects. Susorova, a resident architect, leads enclosure commissioning and energy conservation projects for Fortune 100, 500 and public visionaries.

Elisa Young, JD, CDE has joined Parametrix as director of diversity, equity, and inclusion. She has over 15 years of experience specializing in organizational transformation through strategic planning, policy development, supplier diversity, and workforce development.
Young comes to Parametrix from the City of Seattle where she served as director of equity and policy, providing high-level policy and operational direction on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and programs impacting over 600 employees.
She holds a Juris Doctorate degree from The Ohio State University and is a certified diversity executive.
At Parametrix, she joins the Enterprise Leadership Team, providing vision, leadership, and counsel in the creation of a welcoming and respectful environment that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion, and promotes workplace excellence.

Portland-based Standard Insurance (The Standard) promoted Piet Louw to second vice president of information security and deputy chief information security officer. Louw joined The Standard in 2021 as senior director of information security program management. In that role, he was responsible for further enhancing The Standard's information security program and leading the organizational effort to successfully obtain the company's SOC2 security attestation. In his new role, Louw will be responsible for overseeing security engineering, asset and platform security as well as security program management. Prior to joining The Standard, Louw held several leadership roles managing technology services. Previously, he was senior director of technology services for Trader Joe's and director of service strategy and design at UTi Worldwide. The Standard is the marketing name for StanCorp Financial Group, and its subsidiaries.
Lyceus Group, a public relations and marketing firm specializing in the financial services industry, announced it has been shortlisted by Hedgeweek's US Emerging Manager Awards 2023 for the Best Communications and PR Firm. Lyceus Group represents a variety of clients in the financial services and technology space, including mutual funds, ETF's, private equity firms, hedge funds, startups, cryptocurrency funds, private credit funds, and fund service providers. The Hedgeweek US Emerging Manager Awards recognize excellence among hedge fund emerging fund managers and service providers. The service provider categories span all the key areas of the broader hedge fund industry ecosystem. Headquartered in Seattle, Lyceus Group was founded in 2016.

MultiCare Health System is launching a nursing assistant training program. A 2021 survey by the Washington State Hospital Association showed hospitals in Washington need to hire 6,100 new nurses to meet current staffing needs. Other data shows that nearly half of nurses and hospital staff plan to leave the industry in the next few years. MultiCare's new five-week paid training program has an inaugural class of six students training at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital. Participants in the program will be full-time MultiCare employees. Once the students complete training, they will be able to take the state's certification test and become certified nursing assistants (CNAs). The nursing assistants will be placed at a MultiCare hospital based on need. MultiCare is looking to fill up to 200 CNA positions throughout the system. The organization currently works with nursing assistant programs at Tacoma Community College, Bates Technical College in Tacoma, and Sparrow Healthcare Education in Spokane. Participants in the nursing assistant training program need to have a high school diploma or GED, and previous patient care experience is preferred. Classes will run every eight weeks, with the goal of increasing classes to 30 students. Current MultiCare employees are eligible to apply, as well as the public, provided they meet the program requirements. MultiCare Health System is a Washington-based not-for-profit health care organization with 12 hospitals and more than 22,000 team members.
Portland-based StanCorp Financial Group (The Standard) and Elevance Health announced a definitive agreement under which The Standard will acquire the Life & Disability business from Elevance Health and enter into a product distribution partnership. The Standard, a group life, disability and ancillary benefit provider, was founded in 1906. Elevance Health provides health solutions that serve customers through a portfolio of medical, digital, pharmacy, behavioral, clinical, and complex care solutions. Its Life & Disability unit provides life, disability and related employee benefits. The distribution agreement partners The Standard's sales team with Elevance Health's medical sales team, expanding The Standard's network and bringing a life and disability partner to Elevance Health customers. Upon closing, The Standard will acquire Elevance Health's life, disability, accidental death and dismemberment, absence management and paid family leave businesses. Citi is acting as financial advisor and Debevoise & Plimpton is acting as legal advisor to The Standard. Barclays is acting as financial advisor and Faegre Drinker is acting as legal advisor to Elevance Health.

In Puyallup, Ascendent Demolition hired Chris Hasbrook as its new environmental health and safety manager. Hasbrook began his professional safety career in 2008 and has since worked in many different aspects of construction including demolition, commercial construction, government contracts, safety consulting and claim management. Ascendent says Hasbrook will take its strong safety culture to the next level.

In Redmond, Osborne Construction Co. promoted Natalie Moselle from project coordinator to field engineer. Osborne says Moselle has been instrumental in the success of various agency projects including at the Port of Seattle and the Washington State Department of Transportation, as well as tenant improvements completed by the Special Projects Group.
Lease Crutcher Lewis launched a new subsidiary business unit called Crutcher Structures, which focuses on building structural frames as a specialty subcontractor. Historically, Lease Crutcher Lewis has self-performed structural work on its own projects. Crutcher Structures offers these same services to a broader group of customers. Some of the services offered by the subsidiary include concrete construction; erection of steel frames; wood frame installations, including mass timber; construction support for tower cranes and other lifts; and preconstruction planning for design-build and design assist work. It is working on projects for several clients throughout the Seattle area, including Terminal 106 and 1916 Boren for Trammell Crow, Washington 1000 for Hudson Pacific Properties, 222 5th Avenue for Lincoln Properties, Chapter Building 1 for Touchstone, and First Light for Pacific Structures. Crutcher Structures is named for James (Jim) Crutcher, who spent 50 years at Lease Crutcher Lewis in roles that included president, CEO and chairman. “Delivering outstanding preconstruction services, which we do routinely as a general contractor, is a hallmark of this venture, allowing us to maximize value for our clients,” said Shannon Testa, director of operations for the new subsidiary, in a news release. “We can also capitalize on the economies of scale of our general contracting business to further drive value.”
Several construction companies from Oregon recently won AGC-WTW Construction Safety Excellence Awards. The winners were announced at the Associated General Contractors of America's annual convention last month in Las Vegas. The Oregon winners included: Taylor Northwest of Bend (first place, Heavy Division, under 400,000 worker hours); Slayden Constructors of Stayton (first place, Utility Infrastructure Division, under 200,000 hours); Whitaker Ellis Builders of Tigard (first place, Specialty Division, 175,000-325,000 hours); and Mid-Valley Commercial Construction of Salem (third place, Specialty Division, 175,000-325,000 hours). Greeley, Colorado-based Hensel Phelps won the Grand Award. Locally, Hensel Phelps's Bellevue office recently finished the new parking garage at the Puyallup Sounder station, and is working on the replacement Fawcett Elementary School in Tacoma, the SEA Gateway Project at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building at the University of Washington.
