The Berger Partnership has hired Jennifer Garcia as project manager; Belle Miller, Cristal Jiang, Stephanie Smith, and Paulina Arango as landscape designers; and Lily Daniels as the firm's summer intern.
Garcia supports the firm as a project manager with 12 years of experience and a focus on multifamily, mixed-use, residential, and parks and open space projects. She is a highly collaborative team member and is currently working on the City Hall Park Renovation and the Washington Park Arboretum Japanese Garden in Seattle, the West Sound Technical Skills Center in Bremerton, and the Quincy Aquatic Center in Quincy. She has a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
Miller is particularly interested in sustainable and equitable design and is currently working on Springwood Park in Kent, the Sweeney Blocks and AMLI multifamily developments in Seattle, and a renovation of the Woodland Park Zoo Snow Leopard Exhibit. In addition to her project work, Miller is helping to lead the firm's summer internship and is an active member of the American Society of Landscape Architects Washington Chapter(WASLA). She is an Honors College graduate from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture.
Jiang joins the firm as a landscape designer bringing her graphic skills to the Redmond Central Connector Phase III in Redmond, the West Sound Technical Skills Center in Bremerton, and 121 Boren multifamily development in Seattle. She has three years of experience in landscape architecture with projects ranging from biotech campuses, resilient waterfront parks, and stormwater management. Jiang holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Bachelor of Engineering in Landscape Architecture from the East China University of Science andTechnology in Shanghai.
Arango recently joined the firm as a landscape designer and is working on the Tiny Homes Relocation project in Bellingham and Meydenbauer Bay Park Phase II in Bellevue. She is the recipient of an ASLA Honor Award for the Alabama Meadows Research project and brings a background in both landscape architecture and architecture. Arango holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from Auburn University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia.
Smith joins the firm as a landscape designer with five years of experience in mixed-use development, pedestrian-oriented streetscapes, trails, and open space. She is working on the University of Puget Sound Campus Master Plan in Tacoma, the Southeast Redmond Neighborhood Park in Redmond, and the Orcas Island Farm Retreat, among other projects. She is a licensed landscape architect in the State of California and has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from California Polytechnical State University, San Luis Obispo.
Daniels joins the Berger Partnership as a Master of Landscape Architecture candidate at the University of Washington. Her internship research project, titled “Where the Street Ends: a closer look at Seattle's shoreline street ends and the abundant interconnectedness of our waterways,” explores Seattle's unique relationship with its waterfront and how the 140 street-end pocket parks along our waterways hold the potential for public use and ecological benefits. The final document will touch on the history of shoreline street ends, the importance of water and our connection with it, and a unique approach to utilizing the interconnectedness of our shoreline.


Barghausen Consulting Engineers, Inc. has recently expanded its team by welcoming two new employees to its Kent location. The new hires are a design engineer and a project engineer.
Lyn Do, P.E., rejoined Barghausen on Aug. 14 as a project engineer. Do graduated from Gonzaga University in 2016 with her B.S. in civil engineering. She previously worked for Barghausen from 2017-2020, and then spent time working at ESM Consulting Engineers from 2020-2021, and KPFF Consulting Engineers from 2021-2023. Do has a variety of experiences with both public and private projects.
William O'Leary started at Barghausen on Aug. 14 as a design engineer. He recently graduated from Montana State University with his B.S. in construction engineering in 2022. O'Leary has a diverse background in construction, engineering and carpentry and has previously worked for Russell Square Inc., as a project engineer before joining Barghausen.

Engineering firm Simpson Gumpertz & Heger has welcomed Alex Kosis back as an associate principal, bolstering the company's expertise in building enclosure engineering consulting and sustainable building practices.
Kosis joins SGH's Building Technology group from Denver, Colorado and will partner closely with SGH colleagues throughout the United States, including in the Seattle office. He brings more than fifteen years of experience in the industry, specializing in roofing and waterproofing system design and repair, and thermal analysis for optimal building performance.
Kosis spent eleven years with SGH to start his career, joining the firm as a technical intern in the firm's Washington, DC, office and advancing to senior engineering positions in Southern California and the San Francisco Bay Area. Most recently, he has practiced in Denver and the surrounding region with several prominent building enclosure consulting firms.
Kosis is a LEED Accredited Professional, BD+C, and a registered Professional Civil Engineer in Colorado and California. He received master's and bachelor's degrees in architectural engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

Seattle-based NanoString Technologies, a provider of life science tools for discovery and translational research, appointed Todd Garland as chief commercial officer. Garland has more than 25 years of experience in healthcare and life sciences technologies that serve customers in the discovery, translational and clinical markets. Most recently, he served as chief commercial officer at Cytek Biosciences, a provider of flow cytometry products and services. Prior to joining Cytek, Garland spent 6 years at BD Biosciences as vice president and general manager responsible for all commercial functions including marketing, sales, service and support. Prior to that, he was vice president of Sales at CareFusion, a medical device company, and also held a variety of commercial leadership roles at Cardinal Health. Garland earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from California Polytechnic State University and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
The City of Tacoma has partnered with the Tacoma Tree Foundation to launch Tacoma's Community Tree Program. The program will focus on increasing the urban tree canopy across Tacoma in an equitable manner through neighborhood-based planting projects and tree giveaways, as well as educational activities that highlight the social and environmental benefits of trees. Through the City's Neighborhood Planning Program, residents in Tacoma's McKinley Hill Neighborhood had identified their top priorities. These priorities include developing a neighborhood tree planting program which focuses on outreach and aims to achieve a 25 percent tree canopy cover in the business district and a 35 percent tree canopy cover in residential areas. In direct response, the Community Tree Program will offer 250 street trees to McKinley Hill residents this fall through Green Blocks: McKinley Hill. Requests from residents for free street trees in McKinley Hill project area will be accepted now through September 17. Gene Juarez Salons & Spas is opening its 10th and newest salon in downtown Bellingham this week, with another location in Gig Harbor projected for early November. Gene Juarez's Bellingham shop, located at 1411 Railroad Ave., is the company's first in the North Cascades area and will feature salon services as well as skincare, waxing, and eyelash/brow services. Gene Juarez CEO Katie Trent received her bachelor's degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham. Gene Juarez's Gig Harbor shop will be at 4779 Point Fosdick Dr. N.W., Suite 200, in the former location of Studio Six: The Salon and Spa. The shop's targeted opening is Nov. 11. In June, the company announced that it had sold its Gene Juarez Academy beauty school in Federal Way to Paul Mitchell Schools North Star Group to focus on its salon and spa locations throughout the Puget Sound region.

Armanino, a accounting and consulting firm, appointed Sam Coursey as Pacific Northwest growth leader and added new partners Katrina Perlewitz, formerly of Ernst & Young, and Jason Woon, a former KPMG managing director and M&A valuations specialist, to the Bellevue office. In his new role, Coursey will concentrate on enhancing Armanino's market strategies, fostering team collaboration, and reinforcing the firm's presence in the region. Perlewitz will focus on corporate and partnership tax matters. Perlewitz spent over 15 years at Ernst & Young, and prior to that, worked at KPMG. She holds a master's degree in accounting from the University of Florida. A Seattle-area native and University of Washington alum, Woon is a partner on Armanino's Valuation & Financial Modeling Services team, bringing expertise from roles at KPMG, the SoftBank Vision Fund and other corporate venture capital and M&A finance teams. Armanino provides an integrated set of audit, tax, business management, consulting and technology solutions to companies in the U.S. and globally.
Sinclair Broadcast Group, a subsidiary of Sinclair, Inc., announced that KOMO in Seattle, has been honored by the Radio Television Digital News Association with a National Edward R. Murrow Award. The Murrow Awards recognize outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism. KOMO news anchor Eric Johnson and the Eric's Heroes team were honored in the Sports Reporting/Large Market Television category for Birth of a Boom, a story about a Bainbridge Island family that invented the sport of pickleball, 58 years ago. Johnson's Birth of a Boom earned him his third consecutive National Murrow Award win and is the only National Murrow Award winner in the Seattle market this year. Sinclair, Inc., owns, operates and/or provides services to 185 television stations in 86 markets.
The Associated Builders and Contractors of Western Washington has donated $5,000 to support the Maui fire relief effort. The contractors’ association now has a goal to double that amount. Contributions can be made at https://abccares.org.
