Late last month at the convention center, the Downtown Seattle Association held its annual State of Downtown event. This year's theme was “Path to Progress,” and speakers generally stuck to that sunny note. Spring officially arrives in a few weeks, the daffodils and cherry blossoms are beginning to sprout, and the protected bike lanes in front of Pier 66 are now under construction — in preparation for the coming cruise ship season.
So that's a path, yes, but how much progress does it betoken? DSA numbers show tourism steadily recovering in the post-pandemic era. Amazon's five-day edict does mean a bit more downtown foot traffic — but it's still well below pre-COVID levels. More people are living in newly built apartment buildings from SLU to Capitol Hill. And more long-vacant retail and restaurant bays are finding fresh tenants, presumably with very discounted rents.
