On the Block: Could Amazon's growth in 6 other cities actually be good for ours?

On its face, Amazon's Tuesday announcement that it will expand its corporate headcount in New York City, Dallas, Detroit, Denver, Phoenix and San Diego seemed like more bad news for its headquarters town.

Seattle and Bellevue are currently home to over 50,000 Amazon office workers, plus untold others in fulfillment centers around Puget Sound. But offices are the heart of its local economic clout — and our municipal tax base. Newmark Knight Frank estimates the company has about 18 million square feet of offices, both occupied and in development, on both sides of the lake.
