Description
The Mercer Street tunnel is the first phase of a joint King County/City of Seattle project to control stormwater and sewage overflows. The Denny Way/Lake Union CSO (combined sewer overflow) Control Project will store and treat the wastewater, reducing the amount of untreated overflows that drain into Lake Union and Elliott Bay from a yearly average of 400 million gallons to 8 million gallons.

The 6,200-foot-long, 14-foot-8-inch-diameter Mercer Street tunnel is designed to provide 7.2 million gallons of CSO storage. The tunnel will store flows diverted from the Elliott Bay interceptor, the existing Lake Union tunnel, the central trunk sewer, the city of Seattle’s Phase 1 and 2 pipelines, and the new Elliott West CSO pipeline.

When the Elliott Bay interceptor has capacity, the wastewater stored in the tunnel will be pumped into the interceptor for transportation to and treatment at the West Point Treatment Plant. In addition to the Mercer Street tunnel, this contract includes construction of two 355-foot-long, 96-inch-diameter railroad crossing tunnels another 135-foot-long, 72-inch-diameter railroad crossing tunnel and excavation and shoring of the new Elliott West CSO Control Facility.
