Some employees do not really care about advancement. They are happy in their niche and enjoy being successful at what they are doing. For others, advancement is very important. They may resign if they feel that there is no opportunity to move up.
Opportunities. It may be harder to advance in smaller organizations because there are fewer opportunities. Yet smaller organizations may offer the best prospect for learning on the job. This occurs because a smaller workforces offer opportunities to become all-rounders. Hence, each person gains more experience, but not always advancement. For the smaller company the only way out of this dilemma is to grow.
