Management by Design: Self-esteem can mask lack of skills in workplace

It is easy to understand why self-esteem is promoted in our society as a desirable trait, but is it always desirable?

Great con artists through the ages have had very high self-esteem, believing that they were so good at their persuasive craft that they could extract money from anyone. This attitude is not restricted to con artists. Successful criminals, from embezzlers to bank robbers believe in themselves so highly that they become convinced in their ability to outwit both their victims and law enforcement.
