On the Block: Our post-pandemic recovery? Some lessons from New York

Yes, the office vacancy rates are shocking. Yes, downtown storefronts are showing more plywood and broken glass than window dressing. And yes, as we enter the dark doldrums of the fourth quarter, there are alarmingly few big sales or leases to report. What's a real estate writer to do? Take a long weekend in New York.

I was there earlier this month for a museum, movie, gallery, theater and architecture safari. Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights are my old stomping grounds, and they offer many attractions that will never make their way out west. Brick-and-mortar history doesn't travel; culture only gradually seeps its way from the soaring capitol to the sleepy, dusty hinterlands.
