Western Washington University named Val Monroe Berry as director of human resources. He is currently assistant vice president for human resources at Florida International University in Miami. He will begin his new position at WSU on Aug. 1.
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $493,000 grant to the Pierce College District over the next three years to train people of all cultural backgrounds and learning styles in computer science. Pierce is one of only six Washington community colleges to receive an Advanced Technological Education grant in the last 13 years. It is also the largest NSF grant awarded to any institution of higher education in Pierce County.
The Washington Credit Union League, the state's trade association for credit unions, was honored for its work in marketing and public relations by the Credit Union National Association. The League received awards for its Internet newsletter Focus and a marketing brochure. The league represents the state’s nearly 170 credit unions.
:Janice Niemi was elected to the board of trustees of Artist Trust. Niemi served as a state senator from 1987-1994, and a state representative from 1983-1987 and is a former King County Superior and District Court judge. She will serve a three year term on the board. Artist Trust is a not-for profit organization providing support to individual artists working in all disciplines throughout the state.
Ad 2 Seattle is asking nonprofit organizations that aid children to submit applications for its 2002-2003 public service campaign. Ad 2 will develop an advertising campaign for the organization chosen. Previous recipients of Ad 2 Seattle's public service campaign include Community for Youth, Pediatric Interim Care Center, Street Links and Rise n' Shine. Ad 2 Seattle is part of a national nonprofit organization for young professionals interested in advertising or related fields. Phyllis Bell has resigned her position as president of the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Bell joined the aquarium in 1989 and served as its president and chief financial office since 1992. Patrick Helbling, executive vice president and chief operating officer will serve as acting president.

Columbia Bank has accepted the resignation of J. James Gallagher. Gallagher is vice chairman and chief executive officer of its holding company and vice chairman of Columbia Bank. He will continue to serve the company as a consultant. William T. Weyerhaeuser, a director of the company since 1998 and chairman of the board will assume the position of interim chief executive officer. Columbia Banking System is a Tacoma-based bank holding company whose wholly owned subsidiary is Columbia Bank, with 35 banking offices in Pierce, King, Cowlitz, Kitsap and Thurston counties.
Robin Krueger announced he will resign from his position as CFO of ImageX later this year. Upon Krueger's departure, Gina Meyers, vice president of finance and corporate controller will act as interim-CFO until a successor is hired. Founded in 1995 and based in Kirkland, ImageX is a provider of online solutions for distributing, managing and producing sales and marketing materials.
Corinthian Colleges of Santa Anna, Calif., is opening its second Bryman College campus in the greater Seattle area. The new campus will be located in Lynnwood and will be Corinthian's third college in Washington. The Lynnwood campus will offer a diploma program for medical administrative assistants, with plans to add diploma programs in dental assisting, medical assisting and medical insurance billing and coding.
