Seattle Weekly

Seattle Weekly's parent company, Village Voice Media, named Knute "Skip" Berger as the paper's editor-in-chief and Chuck Taylor as managing editor. Berger returns to his former position with Seattle Weekly after a two-year sabbatical, during which he was a regular commentator on public radio's KUOW-FM and a political columnist for Washington Law & Politics magazine. Taylor is a 16-year veteran reporter and editor at the Seattle Times and was a writer and producer for MSNBC during the Salt Lake City Olympic Games.

TransCore

Pennsylvania-based Transcore will provide a freight management system to the Washington State Department of Transportation's Northwest International Trade Corridor and Smart Border Crossing Program. Transcore's intelligent transportation system will monitor freight shipments traveling on U.S. interstates between the U.S. and Canadian borders. The monitoring technology will be deployed at six existing weigh stations and processing centers along a 300-mile stretch of Interstate 5 between Vancouver, Wash., and the Canadian border.

Foster Farms

Foster Farms, the Northwest's largest poultry producer, is sponsoring a fundraising program called Fostering Education to benefit Washington and Oregon schools. The program directs a percentage of the purchase price of Foster Farms' chicken to K-12 schools and was introduced on a limited scale last year. To participate, consumers can simply enter the code number from each specially-marked package on their phone or computer and designate which school should receive the donation. Seattle Habitat for Humanity

Seattle Habitat for Humanity named Dorothy Bullitt executive director. A longtime community activist, Bullitt has been president of Dorothy Bullitt Management Services since 1992, providing consulting services and arbitration to parties involved in civil suits. Seattle Habitat for Humanity also moved to new offices at 13925 Interurban Ave. S. The organization's phone and fax numbers remain the same.

Lane Powell Spears Lubersky

Stuart C. Allen joined Lane Powell Spears Lubersky of Seattle as a partner in the law firm's business group. He represents hospitality and travel businesses, marketing and sales companies, and homeowners associations. Allen has practiced law in Washington since 1977.

Marcon International

Marcon International, a marine vessel consultant and broker based in Coupeville, sold an ocean deck barge from Alaska Marine Lines to Island Tug and Barge Co., both of Seattle. Island Tug and Barge will use the barge, which once housed personnel involved in the Exxon oil spill cleanup, in service in the Puget Sound region. Marcon has handled the sale or charter of 22 vessels and barges to date in 2002.

Austin Manufacturing Services

Austin Manufacturing Services, a contract manufacturer of printed circuit board assemblies, appointed Jim Sloan director of sales and marketing for North America. A 27-year veteran of the electronics industry, Sloan will oversee contract manufacturing jobs for AMS locations in Austin, Texas, and Nampa, Idaho, from an office in Portland.

Snohomish County Literacy Coalition

The Snohomish County Literacy Coalition is seeking volunteers to tutor adults in reading, writing and language skills for two hours each week. Free training begins Sept. 9 at Everett Community College. Interested individuals, over age 18, may call (425) 388-9539 for more information.
