King County executive Ron Sims and Councilmember Carolyn Edwards presented a plan to transform the King County Office of Cultural Resources into a more independently run agency called the Cultural Development Authority. The new agency will oversee the King County Arts Commission, Public Art Program and the Landmarks and Heritage Commission's funding programs. A 15-member board of directors, appointed and approved by the King County Council, will oversea the agency. The changes take affect in January if approved by the council.
The White Center Community Market will premier Saturday, Sept.14, in downtown White Center. The market will showcase White Center’s mix of cultures from Southeast Asia, Latin America, East Africa and Eastern Europe. The White Center Cultural Alliance will present performances from different cultural groups and the White Center Community School Coalition will provide storytelling for children in many languages. A walking guide to the area’s bakeries, restaurants and ethnic groceries will be available at the event.
Thierry Rautureau, chef and owner of Rover's, will be honored by the Distinguished Restaurants of North America with the Ella Brennan Distinguished Dining Ambassador Award. More than 300 restaurateurs will attend the organization's four-day conference in Seattle at the Elliott Grand Hyatt in September. The Ella Brennan Award recognizes a representative of the restaurant industry who has exemplified and promoted the image of fine dining in America and abroad, and has worked in promoting philanthropic causes. Rautureau is a past James Beard award winner and is celebrating Rover's 15th anniversary this year.
Jane Guiltinan, ND has been elected to the board of directors of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Guiltinan served in an interim position on the board since June. She will be associated with the organization's Insurance Reimbursement Committee, and the Alliance for State Licensing Task Force. Guiltinan is currently dean of clinical affairs for the Bastyr Center for Natural Health in Kenmore.

The National Association of Home Builders named Samuel L. Anderson, executive officer of the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties, as executive officer of the year among the organization's 800 member associations. During Anderson's five-year tenure as executive officer, the MBA grew its membership by 25 percent and increased its community involvement through the Master Builders Care Foundation and other programs. The MBA will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2009 and represents over 3,000 members involved in the building trades.
Bellingham-based Baron Telecommunications acquired the client records for Thomas Telecommunications, which is relocating out of state. Baron provides telecommunications systems, including voice mail and multi-site networking, to businesses throughout the Northwest.
Pacific Fishermen named Chris Johnson to replace longtime Seattle shipyard superintendent Pat Denney, who is retiring after 15 years with the company. Johnson is a former chief engineer onboard Alaska Sightseeing/Cruise West's "Spirit of Discovery." Founded in 1946, Pacific Fishermen conducts repairs and maintenance for ships and yachts.
The U.S. General Services Administration enlarged a five-year contract with Management Engineering Associates of Camas, Wash., to provide marketing, media and public information services. MEA holds other long-term GSA contracts in management consulting, engineering, environmental sciences, energy management, interior design and logistics.
