Seven organizations were nominated to receive the CityClub Community Matters Campaign People's Choice Award for work in building community and civic engagement. They are ACLU of Washington, Artist Trust, Neighborhood House, Pomegranate Center, Refugee Women's Alliance, Seattle Young People's Project and Technology Access Foundation. Five winners will be announced at a free event Nov. 19 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Bertha Knight Landes Room at Seattle City Hall. To register visit http://www.seattlecityclub.org.
KuKuRuZa Gourmet Popcorn, a gourmet popcorn shop, has opened in the Kress Building at 215 Pike St. in downtown Seattle. KuKuRuZa will offer more than 25 flavors of gourmet popcorn including white cheddar, rainbow mixed fruit, burgundy cheddar cheese and s'mores. Robert Hicks is the store's popcorn chef.
The Washington State Chapter of the American Public Works Association awarded its Young Leader Award to Nik Stroup, the city of Bothell's Public Works superintendent. The award recognizes young public works leaders who show potential for future growth within APWA. Stroup has been with Bothell's Public Works Department since 1996, starting as a maintenance worker.

Clipper Navigation, operators of the Victoria Clipper high speed catamarans, hired Steve Rochester as vessel superintendent. Rochester has been chief engineer with Clipper for three years and has worked in the maritime and maintenance industries for 18 years.
The University of Washington Bothell hired R. Brooks Gekler as director of its Business Development Center, a unit within the Business Program at UW Bothell. Gekler has 25 years of experience in business and education, and has been corporate vice president at General Mills, and directed the Augsburg College MBA Management Consulting Program.
Bellevue-based Puget Sound Bank promoted Sean Brennan to executive vice president, chief lending officer; Tony Chalfant to executive vice president, chief credit officer; and Phil Mitterling to executive vice president, chief financial officer. This is a corrected version of an announcement that ran on Nov. 13, which incorrectly identified their new titles.
The law firm Foster Pepper has launched its first legal blog: Native American Legal Update. The blog, at http://www.nativelegalupdate.com, is devoted to legal issues and information relevant to Native American communities.
Tacoma Public Utilities hired Dale King as Tacoma Rail superintendent. King was director of rail services for Weyerhaeuser where he managed 200,000 annual rail shipments in North America. He replaces Paula Henry, who left Tacoma Rail in March to pursue a career with a private railroad.
