Employment in the construction industry, always affected by seasonal changes, is also particularly sensitive to business-cycle changes. As the region braces for a recession, what happens to the 63,000 construction workers employed in King County and others employed in the industry is anybody's guess.
Just over a year ago when the Puget Sound was abuzz with economic activity, among the biggest problems facing local construction companies was a shortage of labor. Now, the economic downturn has changed that picture dramatically. Anxious owners are deferring building plans, as are cash-strapped government agencies.
