Redmond-based commercial steel contractor Apex Steel hired Brian McLean to head its Montana division, where it is working on the Billings Federal Courthouse, its first job in that state. McLean is a Montana native with more than 20 years in the ironworking trade.
GLY Construction moved from Lake Bellevue to a new location in Bellevue. The new address is: 200 112th Ave. N.E., Suite 300, Bellevue, WA 98004-5878. All other company information remains the same.
Pape Machinery in Kelso became the second work site in Washington to be recognized for safety through the new Safety Through Achieving Recognition Together program, or START. The program is administered by the state Department of Labor and Industries and is modeled on the federal Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program, or SHARP. Both programs recognize companies with exemplary safety records.
Woodinville's Northwest Boring Co. won the 2011 Microtunnel Achievement Award from the Colorado School of Mines. The company was cited for its work on the first segment of the Portsmouth Force Main for the city of Portland, where it built more than 1,900 feet of 7-foot-diameter steel casing using microtunneling. Northwest Boring is owned by Donald W. Gonzales.

Seattle's McKinstry Co. won the W.O. Lawton Business Leadership Award for its collaboration on green jobs and skills with the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County. The honor was presented by the National Association of Workforce Boards and accepted by David Allen, McKinstry's executive vice president and a WDC board member.
The Bureau of Reclamation and the Bonneville Power Administration recently won EPA's 2010 Champions of Environmental Leadership and Green Government Award, which recognizes agencies participating in the Federal Green Challenge to reduce greenhouse gases. The award was based upon a $1.2 million lighting retrofit by Light Doctor LLC at Grand Coulee Dam that reduced energy consumption by 1 megawatt. Light Doctor serves Washington, Idaho and Oregon.
