Pete Kangas, vice president of global critical facilities at Turner Construction Co., is retiring this week. The company announced that Jim Faria will assume Kangas' responsibilities as director of preconstruction. Kangas has been in the construction industry for 40 years, including 32 years with Turner, where he rose through the ranks to lead mechanical and electrical preconstruction in the Seattle office. He then helped launch Turner's mission critical group, which has built over $9 billion worth of data centers around the world. Faria has 26 years of construction experience, serving in leadership positions in Miami and Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2001, he and Kangas worked on their first data center project at Turner in Florida.

University of Washington professor and dean emeritus John Schaufelberger will be honored next week with the 2021 ASC Lifetime Achievement Award at the Associated Schools of Construction Annual Conference. Colleagues describe him as an accomplished scholar, servant leader and construction educator whose primary teaching focus centers on the student experience. He earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering and attended Harvard University on a fellowship to the Kennedy School of Government in 1986. Schaufelberger's career in academia began 48 years ago as an assistant professor at the United States Military Academy. Fourteen years later, he was promoted to director for the Department of Military Engineering at the U.S. Army Engineer School. After retiring from the Army, he joined UW's Department of Construction Management, where he continues as a faculty member and former administrator in the CM department and College of the Built Environments. Schaufelberger has also served on many boards, including the Associated General Contractors of Washington, AGC of Washington Education Foundation and American Council for Construction Education.

Jon Ross was promoted to senior project manager at Ascendent Demolition in Puyallup. Ross has 11 years of industry experience, including nearly six years at Ascendent. He has worked on total building demolition, abatement and select tenant improvement projects. In his new role, Ross is leading all large-scale projects, as well as financial oversight. His goals include expanding client relations, creating a cohesive unit with estimators/project managers, and increasing the company's market share.

Renton-based Rock Project Management Services hired Fred Wilhelm as senior director of transportation. Wilhelm was a project director at Vanir Construction Management, and holds a Project Management Professional designation with the Project Management Institute. RPM provides owner's representative services to public and private clients throughout Washington that have K-12, transportation, health care, energy and technology, and tribal projects.

Gov. Jay Inslee named Pedro Espinoza of the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters to the state Housing Finance Commission. Espinoza has been a journeyman carpenter with various locals of the union since 1999. He became a union representative and organizer in 2006. His seat on the commission will represent unions.
The Associated Builders and Contractors of Western Washington recently picked up three new members: United Rentals, Capital One Financial and Global Plumbing. United Rentals has branches in 49 states and 10 Canadian provinces. Capital One has a 2% cashback credit card for businesses that can be used for most vendor purchases. Kent-based Global Plumbing provides re-piping, water heater installs and other plumbing services.
