UMC

Mechanical contractor UMC won a 2022 Safety Excellence Award from the Mechanical Contractors Association of America. The award, presented last month at the MCAA Annual Convention in Phoenix, is the third that UMC has won in the past five years from the association. The company took top honors in Category 4, which covers 450,001-1 million worker hours. UMC says it is constantly innovating new tactics and policies that allow it to grow positive safety program outcomes — including its “Pride-based Safety” program led by Kirk Baisch. This program has five principles: lead by example; own your work zone; do a 5-second visual risk assessment every 5 minutes; know when to stop; and engagement and inclusion.

Pabco Roofing

In Tacoma, Pabco Roofing Products signed on as a gold sponsor of the National Women in Roofing organization. As a gold sponsor, Pabco will support NWiR education programs, networking initiatives and community service efforts. NWiR is a volunteer-based organization that supports and advances the careers of women roofing professionals, including those working in manufacturing, design, installation, investigation, repair and management roles. It provides networking, mentoring, education and industry recruitment opportunities. Pabco Roofing Products is a division of Pabco Building Products, which services the construction industry in the western United States and Canada.

American Welding Society

The American Welding Society designated April as National Welding Month to bring awareness to the welding industry and its available career paths. The association says welding careers play an integral role in keeping people safe and advancing the quality of life, yet participation in welding and other skilled trades continues to decrease. “National Welding Month is an annual opportunity for the welding profession to show the world that we are more than torches and sparks,” said Cassie Burrell, AWS senior vice president of marketing and membership development, in a news release. “Welders must understand shop mechanics, blueprint reading, mechanical drawing, physics, chemistry, and metallurgy. The more technological advances our industry undergoes, the more skills and knowledge we need to do their jobs successfully.” Miami-based AWS has planned a variety of events throughout the month. More information is at aws.org/nwm.

Hasbrook

In Puyallup, Ascendent Demolition hired Chris Hasbrook as its new environmental health and safety manager. Hasbrook began his professional safety career in 2008 and has since worked in many different aspects of construction including demolition, commercial construction, government contracts, safety consulting and claim management. Ascendent says Hasbrook will take its strong safety culture to the next level.

Osborne Construction Co.

Moselle

In Redmond, Osborne Construction Co. promoted Natalie Moselle from project coordinator to field engineer. Osborne says Moselle has been instrumental in the success of various agency projects including at the Port of Seattle and the Washington State Department of Transportation, as well as tenant improvements completed by the Special Projects Group.

Lease Crutcher Lewis

Lease Crutcher Lewis launched a new subsidiary business unit called Crutcher Structures, which focuses on building structural frames as a specialty subcontractor. Historically, Lease Crutcher Lewis has self-performed structural work on its own projects. Crutcher Structures offers these same services to a broader group of customers. Some of the services offered by the subsidiary include concrete construction; erection of steel frames; wood frame installations, including mass timber; construction support for tower cranes and other lifts; and preconstruction planning for design-build and design assist work. It is working on projects for several clients throughout the Seattle area, including Terminal 106 and 1916 Boren for Trammell Crow, Washington 1000 for Hudson Pacific Properties, 222 5th Avenue for Lincoln Properties, Chapter Building 1 for Touchstone, and First Light for Pacific Structures. Crutcher Structures is named for James (Jim) Crutcher, who spent 50 years at Lease Crutcher Lewis in roles that included president, CEO and chairman. “Delivering outstanding preconstruction services, which we do routinely as a general contractor, is a hallmark of this venture, allowing us to maximize value for our clients,” said Shannon Testa, director of operations for the new subsidiary, in a news release. “We can also capitalize on the economies of scale of our general contracting business to further drive value.”

AGC of America

Several construction companies from Oregon recently won AGC-WTW Construction Safety Excellence Awards. The winners were announced at the Associated General Contractors of America's annual convention last month in Las Vegas. The Oregon winners included: Taylor Northwest of Bend (first place, Heavy Division, under 400,000 worker hours); Slayden Constructors of Stayton (first place, Utility Infrastructure Division, under 200,000 hours); Whitaker Ellis Builders of Tigard (first place, Specialty Division, 175,000-325,000 hours); and Mid-Valley Commercial Construction of Salem (third place, Specialty Division, 175,000-325,000 hours). Greeley, Colorado-based Hensel Phelps won the Grand Award. Locally, Hensel Phelps's Bellevue office recently finished the new parking garage at the Puyallup Sounder station, and is working on the replacement Fawcett Elementary School in Tacoma, the SEA Gateway Project at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building at the University of Washington.
