Talking 'The Future': Gen Z and A+E: A growing demographic makes its mark on the AEC industries

In this month's column, I decided to look forward instead of backwards to explore the impact that Gen Z is having, and might continue to have, on the AEC industries. Gen Z is a term used to describe Americans born between 1997 and 2012. The oldest members of this group are now entering the workforce.

According to a recent study by Deltek, Gen Z currently makes up around 14% of AEC employees in the U.S. with some now starting to work in lower-level management positions. Speaking with local firms, the median Gen Z AEC workforce in Washington is around 5% but quickly growing. It's also clear that this generation is already making its mark; from the kinds of projects they want to work on, to their style of working and what they expect of employers.
