The proposed changes to the Critical Areas Ordinance are taking away the use of my land! I am a single father of five children ranging in age from 9 to 16. I purchased a piece of vacant undeveloped land back in June of 1998 on which to build our home. The property is located in unincorporated King County. The land was so expensive that I was only able to afford to build a 1,000-square-foot, mother-in-law house over a garage with the idea that I would build the larger main house later on when I could afford it. I invested roughly $40,000, on top of the cost of the land and my mother-in-law house, in infrastructure cost that would be needed for the main house.
All of this was done in accordance with and reliance on all applicable building codes. With the proposed changes to the Critical Areas Ordnance, I will not be able to build my second house due to the increases in wetlands setbacks. All of my future planning, work already completed and monies invested will go down the drain.
