Turner kept track of work with two different design teams under three separate contracts to complete this office-to-lab conversion.

Location: Seattle

General contractor: Turner Construction

Owner/developer: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

Primary designers: Perkins+Will, ZGF Architects

Turner’s project involved construction of a data center as well as shell-and-core upgrades to convert an office building into a laboratory-ready facility.

The conversion added critical lab systems, a new mechanical rooftop plant and 2,200 kilowatts of generators for backup power. Electrical service was increased by 50 percent.

Three separate phases of construction (shell and core, data center and tenant improvements) allowed Turner to fast-track the project. Precise logistical planning and team coordination were critical, with multiple subcontractors working on two different design teams during different phases of the three separate contracts.

Turner consolidated all the documentation into a single web-based platform so all team members could quickly and easily access and coordinate information.
