Historic church becomes a shining beacon

  • New copper sheeting helps First Baptist regain its landmark status.

    Fifty-three years after Jim Neal, left, bought VSM Contractors the company finished its highest profile job, which entailed installing copper sheeting on the spire of Seattle First Baptist Church. Pictured with Neal near the top of the steeple is his son, Joe, who operates VSM today.

    When Jim Neal was born in Ballard in 1922, the soaring steeple of the Seattle First Baptist Church across town on First Hill had been a dominant feature of the city skyline for 10 years.
