Schools struggle to attract female engineering students

  • Only 20 percent of civil engineering undergraduates at the UW and WSU are women.

    Debbie Chachra, a professor at Olin College in Needham, Mass., is spending the 2008-9 academic year at the University of Washington. All Olin students must take an engineering design course in their freshman year.

    HERE IN WASHINGTON and across the country, there are still far fewer female engineers than male ones, especially in fields such as civil, mechanical and electrical engineering.
