Habitat store helps fund low-income homes

  • Faced with soaring costs, Habitat for Humanity is opening construction materials stores to generate more income.

    Habitat for Humanity’s store south of the Alaskan Way Viaduct sells an assortment of hardware, furniture, appliances, building materials and other home-improvement items.

    HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, which builds affordable housing for low-income families, faces an affordability problem of its own. Soaring land prices and construction costs in the Seattle area have hindered the group's ability to buy properties for new homes. The Seattle-area group has built or rehabilitated 135 homes since its inception in 1986.
