Sydney, San Francisco ranked best in survey

  • NEW YORK (AP) -- With 26,000 of its readers as the judges, Conde Nast Traveler magazine has ranked the best among the world's cities, islands, monuments, resorts, safari camps, airlines, cruise lines, car rental agencies and hotels.

    And the winners are:

    The top five foreign cities, in descending order, are Sydney, Australia; Florence, Italy; Rome, Paris, and Venice, Italy. Sydney has claimed the top spot in this survey for six consecutive years.

    Among U.S. cities, the top five are San Francisco; New Orleans; Charleston, S.C.; Santa Fe, N.M.; and New York City.

    The favorite North American resorts are the Ritz-Carlton, Naples, Fla.; The Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.; The Phoenician, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Pan Pacific Lodge, British Columbia; and the Inn at Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, Calif.

    The best airlines on international routes are Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic , Quantas and Swissair. On domestic routes the favorites are Midwest Express, National, Alaska Airlines, Midway and United.
