It's that time again. Our local chapter of the Urban Land Institute will host the annual Emerging Trends confab on Nov. 16. A bevy of experts will be on hand. PwC's Jeremy Lewis will present highlights from the annual trends report. JLL's Mark Katz will deliver keynote remarks. And a panel of professionals will conduct a roundtable: Mike Pace from Metlife; Danielle Duenas of Area Real Estate; Eastdil Secured's Jason Flynn; and Jackie Hizzey from MainStreetProperty Group. Paragon Real Estate Advisors recently announced that it brokered a seven-unit apartment sale on the very north end of Queen Anne, almost in Interbay. The firm's Cathy Jeney and Ben Douglas represented the longtime family owner in the nearly $1.8 million transaction. Paragon's Nick Hemming represented the buyer, a local investor. The deal was worth about $257,143 per unit. The Emerson was developed in 1952 near West Nickerson Street, not far from Fishermen's Terminal.
Over in Redmond, the 100-unit Trailwood recently benefited from a $14.6 million refinancing package. Northmarq's Andrew Slaton secured the Fannie Mae funding for the 46-year-old garden apartment complex. Slaton is based in San Francisco. He said in a statement, “The property had a bank loan with an unfavorable rate adjustment, and we were able to retire that with an attractive fixed-rate loan during a very volatile time in the market.” The note carries a seven-year term. Trailwood, a little northwest of downtown, last traded to a California investor group in 2005 for almost $14 million.
The Northwest MLS announced recently that CEO Tom Hurdelbrink received the Shuttleworth MLS Executive of the Year Award. The honor came at the Council of Multiple Listing Services Conference earlier this month. He said in a statement, “My thanks to the staff and volunteer leadership at Northwest MLS for providing an environment that enabled me to lead this fabulous organization forward for the past 16 years.” He also plans to retire by year's end. Presently the NWMLS general counsel, Justin Haag will succeed him as president and CEO.
Patricia Anderson, David Beninger, John Gagliardi, Robert Gellatly, Andy Hoyal, Mark Kamitomo and Deborah Martin of Seattle-based Luvera Law Firm have been named to the 2024 Best Lawyers in America ratings guide based on their expertise in personal injury litigation, consumer protection law and medical malpractice law. Gagliardi, Hoyal and Martin are appearing in the guide for the first time. Gagliardi was recognized in the Personal Injury Litigation — Plaintiffs and Medical Malpractice Law — Plaintiffs categories. Hoyal was recognized for his work in both the Consumer Protection Law and Personal Injury Litigation — Plaintiffs categories. Martin was honored in the Personal Injury Litigation — Plaintiffs category. Additionally, the 2024 guide includes Anderson in the Personal Injury Litigation — Plaintiffs category; Beninger in the Personal Injury Litigation — Plaintiffs category; Gellatly in the Medical Malpractice Law — Plaintiffs and Personal Injury Litigation — Plaintiffs categories; and Kamitomo in the Medical Malpractice Law — Plaintiffs category. The Best Lawyers guide is based on peer-review surveys, as well as client evaluations. Luvera Law Firm handles a variety of cases, including serious injuries and wrongful death caused by commercial and vehicle accidents, medical malpractice, product defects, construction site accidents, corporate wrongdoing and insurance misconduct.
Vilya appointed Cyrus Harmon as its chief executive officer. Harmon brings decades of experience as an executive and entrepreneur at the intersection of drug discovery, molecular biology and computation to the role, and will also join the board of directors. Previously, Harmon co-founded and served as CEO of Olema Oncology, a company focused on women's cancers, before transitioning to the role of chief research officer. He also co-founded and served as CEO of Neomorphic, a genomic software company acquired by Affymetrix. Harmon completed his Ph.D. and bachelor's degrees in molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley. Harmon joins Katerina Leftheris, Vilya's chief scientific officer, on the company's leadership team. Leftheris held senior roles in drug discovery at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pliant Therapeutics, Celgene and Vitae Therapeutics. Also, Vilya co-founders Sabah Oney and Inca Dieterich will join the board of directors. Vilya named its scientific advisory board, which includes Brian Shoichet of the University of California, San Francisco; Jennifer Petter, founder and chief innovation officer of Arrakis Therapeutics; Nick Meanwell, former vice president at Bristol-Myers Squibb; William Greenlee of Medchem Discovery Consulting; and Philip Dawson of Scripps Research. Vilya is a computational biotechnology company creating a novel class of medicines to precisely target disease biology. Vilya was co-founded by a team of scientists from the Institute of Protein Design led by David Baker, and ARCH Venture Partners. The company has operations in Seattle and South San Francisco.
Mandy Ho joined The Matthews Group at UBS, part of UBS Private Wealth Management, as a relationship manager at the firm's Bellevue office. Ho has extensive experience working with nonprofits and institutional investors. She joins UBS from BNY Mellon Wealth Management, where she served as senior director, wealth manager. Prior to BNY Mellon, she was a senior vice president, portfolio manager at Key Private Bank. She earned a bachelor's degree and an MBA from Wheeling Jesuit University. She also earned a master's degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Ho is a CFA charterholder and a Certified Investment Management Analyst. The Matthews Group works with ultra-high-net-worth individuals, business owners, entrepreneurs and multi-generational families to help them meet their wealth management goals. Global design firm HKS has welcomed Carl Hampson as a principal and regional design director based in the firm's new Seattle office. Hampson brings distinctive design influence to physical and mental health care, science and technology, higher education, and civic architecture. His work has earned numerous AIA design awards and industry accolades.
HKS opened its Seattle office at Rainier Square's 400 University office tower in the Central Business District.




PACE welcomed several new employees during Q3.
Ryan Sheean joined the engineering firm as a senior project manager. He brings over 11 years of engineering experience. His expertise is in water resources and civil engineering. At PACE, Sheean will be responsible for delivering successful projects for the Water Resources team.
James Schouten III joined the PACE team as an engineer. Schouten III's background is in land development. This will be his first time joining a municipal team in Washington State. He brings an intense curiosity to learn more about practices in municipal engineering and effortless communication.
Tracy Hill joined PACE as a project accountant. She brings five years of experience. Hill has knowledge of Deltek Vision, experience with the engineering and architecture environment, and skills in accounting, contract management, and project planning. At PACE, she will be responsible for project billing and ensuring contracts and budgets are accurately entered into the firm's system.
Jared Foulk has joined PACE as an engineer. He has two years of experience. Foulk is a creative, critical thinker, organized, enjoys learning, and is skilled in problem-solving. At PACE, he will be responsible for stormwater design, reviews, and assisting the Land Development team.
Chip Dodd joined the team as a survey field technician. Dodd is new to the industry as he was a former community college geography instructor for 27 years. He will be responsible for topographical surveys, ALTA surveys, condominium surveys, horizontal and vertical control surveys, construction staking, boundary, and GPS Control surveys.
Also joining the PACE team are Jorge Garcia, survey field technician; Cole Smith, engineer; Alex Mathis, survey field technician; Eric Harmon, senior survey field technician; Marbella Coleman, engineering intern; Yekaterina Ionova, engineering intern; Jacob Keller, engineering intern.


Tarragon announced the promotions of Benjamin Waiss and Jake Self .
Waiss has been promoted to director of development. Waiss embarked on his Tarragon career in 2014 and has contributed to the development of the firm's industrial portfolio over the past nine years, notably on projects like Salmon Creek Corporate Park and SeaPORT Logistics Center in Sumner. Presently, he oversees all day-to-day operations at SeaPORT Logistics Center as well as Tarragon's other efforts throughout the Northwest. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from Caroll College, where he specialized in Civil Engineering. Before transitioning to development, Waiss worked as a civil engineer at Huitt-Zollars. He is an active member of NAIOPWA and previously served as one of the Co-Chairs for NAIOPWA's South Sound Committee.
Self has been promoted to the position of development associate. Self started as an intern at Tarragon in 2023. He has become integral to the industrial team, contributing on projects in the Puget Sound region as well as Eastern Washington and Idaho. Before his time at Tarragon, he honed his skills at a brokerage firm, representing tenants and owners in the industrial sector. Self holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Washington State University.
