What was once a parking lot at 60 Yesler Way is now the second Seattle location — after South Lake Union — for citizenM, the international boutique hotel chain with Dutch roots. Visitors began occupying their rooms on May 23, and we toured the project last week. The 10-story, 216-room hotel has opened in a very different world than that in which when it began — before COVID-19.
As the DJC first reported, the land traded in 2017 for $4.5 million, when the viaduct replacement tunnel was still underway. The Alaskan Way Viaduct was still standing, immediately west of the site. And the DJC has had a front-row seat for the duration of the entire project, designed by Gensler and built by Mortenson (starting in February of 2020, pre-pandemic), since our office is a stone's throw away. Whenever I've stared out our windows on Western Avenue, there's been a real-time update on its progress — no construction cam needed.
