Alterra Mountain Co. didn't immediately reply to media queries after announcing a $100 million expansion plan last week for Crystal Mountain Resort. Many details are still opaque. The ski area, at 33914 Crystal Mountain Blvd. in east Pierce County, had been relatively quiet, industry-gossip-wise, since its unpriced sale in 2018. It then traded from smaller private hands to a much larger private entity backed by KSL Capital Partners and run by the Crown family's Aspen Skiing Co.
The initial $26 million development plan is supposed to begin with demolition in April, when the lifts will still be running. That work will begin at the bottom of the mountain, where a new two-story building is planned on the east side of the entry plaza.
