Upon catching a little fish, experienced anglers often unhook it and release it back into the water. When asked why, they will usually reply: “I'm waiting for the big one.”
From the point of view of eating tonight's dinner, that may make sense. From the point of view of the health of the fish population, it may not. The biggest, strongest and fastest-growing fish are produced by the biggest, strongest and fastest parent fish. So, depleting that stock will tend to deplete the population, and there will be fewer trophy fish in the future. What will remain are more and more smaller, slower specimens.
