Tukwila's Starfire Sports, a nonprofit encouraging young people to participate in sports, appointed Rick Grimes general manager of operations. Grimes will be responsible for outreach, program and facility operations. Starfire opens its 80,000- square-foot athletic center this year. Grimes has 10 years of operational management experience, including work as a director for a visual programming services company in Seattle. Starfire operates a 54-acre family sports complex in Tukwila, which includes an athletic center, outdoor soccer stadium and 11 athletic fields.
Lea J. Armstrong, president and owner of Federal Way-based Armstrong In-Home Care Services, was nominated one of 11 of this year's Women of Influence, a program run by the Tacoma-based Business Examiner that recognizes business women. Armstrong's business is to help those in need of long-term personal care in their homes.
The YMCA of Greater Seattle recognizes J. Shan Mullin at a luncheon on Oct. 29 at the Seattle Sheraton. Mullin, a partner in the Seattle Office of Perkins Coie, will be recognized for volunteer leadership. Tickets start at $60 and are available until Oct. 15. Call (206) 382-4368 for more information.
NetIQ Corp., a provider of systems and security management, announced James Barth retired as senior vice president and chief financial officer. Richard (Rick) Van Hoesen takes his place for both positions. Van Hoesen was vice president at privately-held XACCT Technologies and held senior management positions at Sun Microsystems and Teradata. NetIQ is headquartered in San Jose, Calif., with operations in Bellevue, Houston, Portland and Raleigh, N.C.. It also has an office in Galway, Ireland.
Seattle's Grand Central Bakery named Margaret Davis catering coordinator. Davis was kitchen manager for Culinary Arts Catering, a company that serves private aircraft in the greater Seattle area. At Pasta & Co., Davis created menus, and recruited and trained staff.

Seattle-based chef Thierry Rautureau, who is originally from France, was recognized by the French government for his contribution to French cuisine. The owner of Rover's earned an order of agricultural merit and will receive a medal and diploma when the Consul General of France comes to Seattle on Sept. 29. Rautureau is working on a cookbook to be published by Ten Speed Press next year.
The law firm of Van Ness Feldman named John Iani partner. Iani was regional administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency, managing environmental programs in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Alaska. Iani will work out of the firm's Seattle and Washington, D.C., offices. He was vice president for a seafood company and a lawyer at a Seattle law firm. Van Ness Feldman provides legal and government policy counsel on energy, environmental, natural resources and tax issues.
Seattle-based HomeStreet Bank will contribute $48,730 to Northwest zoos through partnerships with Woodland Park Zoo, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Oregon Zoo. The bank also gave $5,000 to Common Ground, a nonprofit that supports affordable housing for people with low incomes and special needs in Washington state. HomeStreet has 30 branches in the Northwest and Hawaii. Each year, it contributes two percent of annual pre-tax profits to community organizations.
The Seattle law firm of Preston Gates & Ellis added six associates. Jill Cartwright works on commercial litigation in the San Francisco office. Aileen P. Haviland is in corporate securities in Anchorage. Monique Henga is also in Anchorage and works on employment and benefits. Senior associate Sebastian Hughes will work on intellectual property in Hong Kong. Laura Sell works on commercial litigation in Seattle. Sell's litigation experience includes legal malpractice defense, construction defect and surveyor malpractice. Trilby Robinson-Dorn's practice includes litigation of employment discrimination. Preston Gates & Ellis does intellectual property, technology, governmental, regulatory and public policy work.
