It has been my custom for many years to offer a broader vision in my year-end column.
Between 1945 and 1989, the world, although threatening and unstable, was at least unstable within the framework of a known threat. There were the communists and there were the capitalists. All the wars between those years were expressions of the rivalry between those factions. Even terrorism in those days was embedded within the context of that ideological struggle.
