David Okimoto, a 25-year veteran in Seattle/King County human service work, will join the United Way of King County team as vice president of community services. For 11 years, Okimoto was the Atlantic Street Center’s executive director. Atlantic Street Center provides counseling, parenting and case management services to children, youth and families in central and southeast Seattle. Okimoto has volunteered for more than 30 agencies, and has served as a board member or chair for many of them. He is a founding member of the Minority Executive Directors Coalition, and served as its president in 1999.
The Seattle Times Co. announced Corky Burr will be classified advertising director. Burr has been with the Seattle Times for 12 years, most recently as customer marketing manager. She has worked in advertising at the Times since 1989.
Internap Network Services, a provider of intelligent routing services over the Internet, announced co-founder Paul McBride will move out of his role as CFO. A search has commenced for his successor. John Scanlon has been named vice president of finance, effective immediately. Most recently, Scanlon was vice president of service planning at Internap, responsible for marketing, product management, carrier relations and infrastructure planning. He joined Internap in 1999.
Safeco announced promotions of several employees. Safeco Corp.: Christopher Nelson is named assistant vice president. He is director of corporate security for the Safeco
companies, based in Seattle. Safeco Property & Casualty: Kim Garland is assistant vice president, director of auto products for the eastern half of the country; Greg Tacchetti is assistant vice president, director of field underwriting for personal lines products; Jim Arciere is assistant vice president, director of personal lines claims. Seattle Parks and Recreation has given the official name of Mineral Springs Park to a four-acre park in North Seattle. The park at 10556 Meridian Ave. N. was previously known as North Seattle Park. The park is located in an area of natural springs, near historic Licton Springs. It was acquired by the department in 1969.
Carolyn L. Oakley has been appointed the secretary's regional representative for Region X in the office of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson. She will be based in Seattle and oversee HHS policies and programs for Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Oakley previously served for 10 years as the 36th District state representative in Oregon.
The 234-room SpringHill Suites has opened in downtown Seattle. The luxury suites at 1800 Yale Ave. are managed by Marriott. Room rates start at $99 a night. SpringHill Suites has 75 locations now and is planning to grow to 125 over the next two years.
Toni Olsen has been promoted to assistant manager of corporate services in the Everett office of the Snohomish County Public Utility District. She will replace Emmett Heath who is now assistant general manager of distribution services.
Safe Harbors has received more than $175,000 worth of technology, including technical information, software, hardware and training, from in a grant from Gifts In Kind International. The award is part of the TechLearn program, which will bring $6 million worth of technology to thousands of nonprofits in North America. Safe Harbors will distribute the technology to more than 45 charitable agencies in the Seattle-area that work with homeless people. Safe Harbors is a joint effort of the city of Seattle, King County and United Way of King County. The project is designed to enhance the care of homeless people by using information technology.
