Steilacoom-Dupont Road To Thorne Lane Corridor Improvements

Location: JBLM vicinity

General contractor: Atkinson Construction

Atkinson Construction rebuilt the interchanges at Thorne Lane and Berkeley Street on Interstate 5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and added lanes to relieve chronic traffic congestion and improve mobility along the interstate.

This work included widening 5.25 miles of I-5 to add a fourth general-purpose lane in each direction, replacing the existing Thorne Lane and Berkeley Street interchanges and constructing separate crossings over the adjacent Sound Transit railroad. The team also constructed new auxiliary lanes along the interstate, reconstructed the Madigan gate access control point, raised the I-5 mainline grade to fill a sag at the Berkeley interchange, and constructed three roundabouts.

In addition, the scope of work included a high-performance median barrier, retaining walls, sound walls, security walls, drainage, signing, illumination and intelligent transportation systems.
