Over the last five years, MacDonald Miller has put an emphasis on muscle rolling prior to the daily pre-work stretch and flex. The company provides employees with Tiger Tail muscle rollers to use prior to stretching. Rolling out leg muscles helps remove lactic acid and knots, lengthens the muscles and warms up the body, which makes the body more receptive to stretching.

Since implementing muscle rolling, MacDonald Miller has had a 67% reduction in back strains. But, not only that, its employees have really taken a liking to the rollers and many have purchased rollers for home use and for family members. Since muscle rolling has been so successful, the company is now adding muscle recovery stations to the mix. Muscle recovery stations are massagers like Theraguns that employees can voluntarily use if they are sore. MacDonald Miller is in the infancy of this program, so there is no evidence of injury prevention yet.

In last several years, mental health has become more of a workplace safety concern and MacDonald Miller is stepping up to the challenge and discussing it and attempting to make talking about mental health less of a stigma. The company wants its employees to know that it is OK to not be OK, and if they ever need anyone to talk to, MacDonald Miller will provide the right resources and assist in any way it can.

MacDonald Miller’s safety director is pushing mental health awareness at a national level through his participation on the Mechanical Contractors Association of America’s (MCAA) national safety committee. The committee is producing a mental health/death by suicide prevention video that is scheduled to be complete within the next several months. The committee creates up to three new safety training videos a year, and plans the MCA national safety conference as well. In 2023, MacDonald Miller is focusing on death by suicide prevention.

The safety director also speaks at industry association meetings — including MCAWW, SMACNA, ASSP and Safe Alliance — covering all different topics and getting together with other great safety minds to work on the common goal of keeping workers safe.

A MacDonald Miller safety manager is on the NECA safety committee as well, working on ways to improve the company’s electrical program and keep its employees safe.

MacDonald-Miller has always thought safety is best when sharing your problems and solutions with the peers around you. This helps develop the safest solutions while also helping the people around you continue to improve their safety as well.
