Triad Associates announced the hiring of Jeff Morgan as project planner. He has 12 years of experience as a senior planner at Skagit County and as development manager at Tucci & Sons. Morgan will use his public and private sector insights to expedite projects through land-use approvals.
Michael Huey joins Triad as an engineer. Huey brings to Triad seven years of experience reviewing and approving development proposals at Snohomish County. Peter Evans is a new engineering CAD technician.
CDi Engineers announced that Mari M. Hamasaki has earned her Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design professional accreditation through the U.S. Green Building Council. The certification means that Hamasaki has demonstrated her knowledge of green building design, practices and strategies and her understanding of the LEED Green Building Rating System, resources and processes.
Hamasaki incorporates her knowledge and experience with sustainable building design on the projects she manages, most notably for the Seattle Justice Center, which is designed to obtain a LEED Silver rating. She also serves as project manager for such projects as the University of Washington Suzzallo Library renovation, new construction and renovations to the Instructional Technology Center at South Seattle Community College and building commissioning services at the Immunex Cell Banking facility in Bothell.
Michael L. Miller has become a new partner in the downtown Bremerton architectural firm Rice Fergus Miller Architecture & Planning, joining partners Steven Rice and David Fergus. Miller joins the firm after having practiced since 1983 at Seattle's NBBJ, where he was director of senior living design and a health care practice leader. Miller specializes in design and master planning of health care facilities and senior housing projects.
The firm begun in 1987 and has grown to a staff 15. In addition to health care and senior housing, the firm emphasizes fire and emergency services projects and community business facilities planning.
NBBJ partners have announced this year's promotions and awards. Cecile E. Haw, William J. Nichols and Timothy J. Johnson were made firm partners. Haw is a member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants and the International Society of Certified Public Accountants. Nichols has focused on the internal operations and financial management of NBBJ during his 20 years with the firm. He runs the daily operations of NBBJ, including financial performance, legal affairs, risk management and office services. Johnson is principal-in-charge of design for NBBJ's New York office, and is recognized as one of the leading young design talents today and has extensive experience in the corporate and commercial design markets.
In addition, NBBJ's Seattle office has three new principals, four promotions to senior associate and 11 new firm associates.
New principals are Scott J. Johnson, Jim Suehiro and Chuck Kolb. Johnson has partnered with some of the firms' strongest designers, and has helped realize some of NBBJ's most innovative buildings. Suehiro brings 25 years of architectural experience to his role in airport terminal planning and design. Kolb has longstanding relationships with Puget Sound's most successful health care providers.
New senior associates are Brenda K. Clark, Jeffrey I.L. Miller, Tom Owens and Lynne Shira. New associates are Daniel Ayars, William Chu, Steve Doub, Cameron Hall, Carolyn P. Johnson, Glen H. Kawaguchi, Mindy Levine, Jacqueline Pulley, Celeste C. Robinette, Robert V. Smith and Melanie Taylor.
Tacoma-based Precision Machine Works and Seattle-based MagnaDrive Corp. have formed a partnership to manufacture, assemble, test, package and ship MagnaDrive adjustable speed drive units and MagnaDrive coupling units. MagnaDrive Corp. will manage product design, sales and applications engineering of the new products, which are currently installed in over 100 systems in several industries, including wastewater treatment, pulp and paper, HVAC, food processing and power generation.

Mithun has named three new principals, in a step that represents the broadening of the firm’s services. Elizabeth MacPherson, Mark Smedley and Bryon Ziegler are the newest members of the leadership team.
MacPherson is the first interior designer to be named principal. She has been with the firm for seven years. Her work on commercial, retail, residential, special needs housing, hospitality and medical projects has made her a national speaker on the trends and principles of interior design.
Smedley has been working for Mithun’s residential care group for five years. His projects include designs for seniors, affordable housing and special needs housing. He has been a long-time advocate/educator on the unique design elements and sensitivities these projects require.
Ziegler is an urban designer who is currently working on Seattle’s center city open space strategy. He focuses his energies on creating urban places, with the goal of making the spaces between the buildings wonderful experiences, he said. He hopes to broaden the firm’s urban design expertise to offer clients a national and international perspective.
Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire has promoted Pat Ryan to senior associate and Ola Johanson, Brian Pavlovec and Steve Godes to associate.
Ryan is one of Skilling’s leading aviation specialists, with recent work on the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport Expansion. He is also actively involved with Skilling’s development of advanced blast analysis and security design measures.
Johanson is a key member of Skilling's hospitality and housing group. He recently completed design of three residential projects in Seattle’s First Hill area and is currently managing 333 First Street, two residential high-rise towers in San Francisco.
Pavlovec joined Skilling in October 2001, bringing 18 years of managing projects such as Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, College of Business at Iowa State University and Seattle City Hall. He will augment Skilling’s higher education and health care capabilities.
Godes is one of Skilling’s senior civil project managers, specializing in campus in-fill developments. He joined Skilling in mid-2001, with 20 years of experience. Currently working on the Roosevelt High School renovation and Bellevue Community College projects, Godes is also involved with Skilling’s sustainable design efforts.
CH2M Hill made two appointments in its Northwest transportation business group.
Jory Abrams has been promoted to transportation business group manager for CH2M Hill’s Northwest region, which includes Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Montana, Idaho and Hawaii. Previously, Abrams served as regional project delivery manager for the transportation business group. She is a certified senior project manager for CH2M Hill and teaches project management courses both internally and externally. She will lead the firm’s technical and business growth in the Northwest for highways, bridges, transit, ports, ferries, airports, and related defense facilities.
Mark Mulvihill has joined CH2M Hill as its Northwest regional business development and planning manager. Based in Seattle, Mulvihill has experience in design-build and mega projects, business development and project management. He'll lead business development efforts in the Northwest. Mulvihill is on the Mega Design Build Liaison Committee for the state Department of Transportation, Washington Chapter of the Associated General Contractors and Washington Chapter of the American Consulting Engineers Association.
Joe Mattoni joined Johnson Braund Design Group Inc. after 10 years as an architect in Cincinnati. Mattoni has managed numerous project types, including multi-family housing, elder care and schools. For the past four years, he has specialized in hotels. At Johnson, he is continuing his hospitality work for Marriott as well as franchisees and developers.
Gabriel Hanson received both his bachelor of arts and master’s degree in architecture from the University of Washington. He recently completed his thesis project entitled Fremont Digital Media in June 2001. He began his career as an intern architect at Zimmerman Architecture on Bainbridge Island where he prepared schematic design and construction documents on a number of high-end residential and commercial projects. Hanson will provide architectural production and computer graphics support on Johnson Braund Design Group’s housing and hospitality projects
