Betts, Patterson & Mines has added five new attorneys. Maggie Diefenbach has joined as a director. Diefenbach concentrates her practice in insurance defense matters. Mark E. Mills is of counsel and practices in the Insurance Coverage Group. Marissa A. Alkhazov is a litigation attorney and focuses on complex litigation and insurance defense law. Yvonne M. Benson is a litigation attorney. She focuses on insurance defense litigation, including construction defect, personal injury, liquor liability, and legal malpractice litigation. Morgan Emmerton Smith is a litigation attorney and concentrates on complex litigation that includes insurance coverage disputes and insurance defense law.
James Alan Salon in Shoreline is now James Alan Salon & Spa, and has expanded and relocated to a 4,400-square-foot space at 19240 Aurora Ave. N. Grand opening is Aug. 15.

Salish Lodge & Spa named Tyler Hefford-Anderson executive chef of Salish Lodge & Spa. Tyler spent nearly a decade at Seattle's Rainier Club, where he was executive sous chef. He also opened the Opal Bistro on Queen Anne and has worked for caterers, cooking schools and private clubs.
Valeri Pate has joined Key Community Development as vice president and relationship manager. She will finance projects that benefit low- and moderate-income households in the Northwest through tax credit investments. She was most recently with Enterprise Community Partners and the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, the state's housing finance agency.
King County won four awards for IT innovations involving voting, transit and helping people repare for floods. The Vote by Mail Transition Program won a CIO 100 award from CIO magazine. Vote-by-Mail also received an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties. NACo also gave Achievement Awards to the ADA Mobile Data Terminal/AVL project, which installed automatic vehicle location technology in the Access transportation fleet for people with disabilities. The Flood Response program also received an NACo award.


Seattle's Veca Electric & Communications hired Robert Long as project manager. Long has more than 22 years of experience with mechanical, electrical and technology systems. He also is experienced in sustainability and integration of MEP systems.

Tacoma-based Rushforth Construction was awarded a 2010 STEP Platinum award for safety from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Western Washington. The Safety Training and Evaluation Process program gives contractors a method to develop and measure their safety programs. To earn a platinum-level award, companies must have a recordable incident rate of 3.3. Rushforth's RIR was 1.75 in 2009 and is 0.0 so far in 2010. Rushforth is a subsidiary of Adolfson & Peterson Construction.
BMC Select of Boise, Idaho, won its third consecutive Partners of Choice Award from David Weekley Homes, a Houston-based homebuilder that operates in 14 cities across the country. BMC Select is a provider of building materials and construction services to homebuilders and contractors in 11 states, including Washington, Oregon and Idaho. It has earned the award four times in the last five years.
Cascade Windows is donating 68 windows to the Millard Fuller Center for Housing. The donation will help 10 families receive new homes during the 2010 Millard Fuller Legacy Build, which will take place next month in Indianapolis. Cascade makes vinyl windows and patio doors at plants in Spokane, Portland and Salt Lake City. The donation is valued at about $10,000.
