Mutual Interest, the Seattle nonprofit that pools money to help homeless people pay deposits on apartments, distributed $50,000 in grants for this year, double last year's total.
The money will help about 100 families move from transitional housing into their own apartments, said Mutual Interest Executive Director John Lang.
The funds went to the following social service providers, who direct it to families in need: Family Services Transitional Assistance Program, Fremont Public Association’s Housing Stability Program, the Salvation Army, Seattle Emergency Housing Services, The Homelessness Project, and the YWCA.
A major portion of the money came from the apartment industry through the Rental Housing Association of Puget Sound, Lang said.

John L. Scott promoted Jerry Moon from executive vice president to president. Company head J. Lennox Scott, whose list of titles included president, trimmed to chairman and CEO. Moon joined John L. Scott as vice president of sales and marketing in 1990 and became executive vice president in 1991.
John L. Scott added a new office, called North Bellevue, in the headquarters of John F. Buchan Homes at 2821 Northup Way. John L. Scott was Buchan's broker for 25 years -- until 1994, when Buchan decided to manage its own sales, according to John L. Scott. Competitor Windermere Real Estate then became Buchan's "in-house broker." But as of March 1 the job has gone back to John L. Scott. The deal makes John L. Scott the broker for Buchan Homes and Buchan Properties.
Doug Eide is manager of John L. Scott's Kingston office, replacing Gayle Vanhulle, who retired. Eide started in real estate in 1979 with Spot Realty in Port Orchard. He bought Spot in 1983 and sold it in 1995. He taught continuing education for the Olympia, Clallam and Kitsap Realtor boards, was an instructor evaluator for the Washington Association of Realtors and became one of three national speaker-trainers for Realtor.com. Since 1999 he was vice president and national sales manager for HomeSeekers.com.
Dawn Bickford became a sales associate in John L. Scott's Federal Way office. Bickford, a long-time Federal Way resident, is new to real estate after working 15 years in corporate sales and marketing. Michael Smith also joined the Federal Way office.
Nancy Hughes, Karen Pfleger, Candace Sherrill and Debbie Allison joined the Lynnwood office. Adrienne Wilson and Joseph Tolbert became sales agents in the Highlands office in North Seattle. Wendi Ruth Martin now sells in the Redmond office.
Bob Garrison and Patti Murphy are new at the North Bend office. Randy Stender started in Silverdale. Ike Onuegbu joined the Kent office, where sales are running high enough that managing broker Michael Morelli said he plans to increase from 40 agents now to 55 by the end of the year, a 40 percent increase. To handle the growth, the office will soon move to 13026 Kent-Kangley Rd.
Sean Ngo became a sales associate in Windermere Real Estate's Queen Anne office. Ngo previously worked as an assistant product manager with Microsoft.

Art Coffey was promoted to president of WestCoast Hotels. Coffey still holds his previous title of executive vice president and chief financial officer for parent company WestCoast Hospitality Corp. of Spokane, which finished buying Red Lion Hotels Inc. of Vancouver. With the acquisition, WestCoast owns, manages and franchises 93 hotels in 16 states. During Coffey's 13 years with WestCoast, the company has grown from three hotels. The company went public in 1998. It also owns an entertainment ticket service and a real estate services company.
Sharon Sanchez rose from vice president of operations and brand management for Red Lion to executive vice president of WestCoast Hotels' hotel division. Sanchez was instrumental in Doubletree Hotels' purchase of Red Lion in 1996 and Promus Corp.'s acquistion of Doubletree in 1997. She chairs the transition team that's integrating Red Lion into WestCoast.
Charlie Cahill, also from Red Lion, became senior vice president of marketing for WestCoast Hotels. Cahill came to Red Lion in 1997 from Doubletree. He worked as director of marketing for Marriott from 1985 to 1996.
Red Lion's vice president of development, Manfred Gerling, received that title for WestCoast Hotels, which said Gerling doubled the number of Red Lion-branded hotels during a two-year period. Mark Hanson, also out of the Red Lion fold, was named development director.
Hotel broker Chris Burdett of Colliers International said Red Lion executives provide experience in franchising, which is new to WestCoast.
Jennifer Saake became controller of Bianco Properties, a Missouri-based firm that controls residential, retail and industrial buildings in Seattle, St. Louis and Tulsa. Bianco recently bought the 70,000-square-foot Lynnwood Plaza shopping center.
Jeanette Henderson, director of real estate for the University of Washington for the past two years, will talk about UW's real estate plans at Commercial Real Estate Women's next lunch meeting, set for March 14. Five people started three-year terms on the board this year: Barbara Crabtree, broker at John L. Scott-Bainbridge Island, who represents Kitsap County; Jim Koetje, broker at Skagit Valley Properties in Mount Vernon, who represents Skagit County; Joan Longstaff, broker at Joan Longstaff Associates in Edmonds, representing Snohomish County; Gary O’Leyar, broker at Prudential Signature Properties, representing West King County; and Tom Quigg, broker at Windermere Real Estate Grays Harbor in Aberdeen, representing Grays Harbor County.
Three began one-year terms as company representatives: Richard W. "Dick" Fulton, broker at Coldwell Banker Bain in Seattle; Vern Holden, broker at Windermere Real Estate- Mill Creek in Bothell; and Lennox Scott, president of John L. Scott of Bellevue.
Chris Axtell became a sales associate in Windermere Real Estate's Queen Anne office. Axtell was previously national branch manager with Redhook Ale Brewery in Seattle.
Quadrant Homes started sales and construction at its tenth and eleventh Puget Sound-area single-family subdivisions. Action started on 154 homes at Patrick's Faire in Maple Valley near Lake Wilderness, and on 70 homes in Silverwood, located in Federal Way. Both offer homes of three to five bedrooms starting below $200,000.
Bruce and Dolores Dong bought a 12-unit apartment building on Capitol Hill at 601 E. Roy St. from C & K Inc. for $1.09 million. The Dongs conducted the purchase as part of a 1031 exchange. Broker Paul Mickley of Paragon Real Estate Advisors assembled the deal
Short Cressman & Burgess named Bradley P. Thoreson chair of its real estate section. Thoreson has been a partner in the firm since 2000. His practice is focused on real estate litigation, specializing in commercial transaction work-outs and complex commercial disputes.
