| Description: |
The passenger boarding gateway provides access to cruise ships, with a gangway capable of 24 feet of vertical travel to accommodate multiple vessels and door locations with the wide range of tidal fluctuation. The self-powered gangway is mobile to allow it to be set up in several locations on the dock and be stored when the Bell Street Pier is occupied by other vessel types.
The gangway system uses old technology in a new way by using screw jacks for the vertical lifting of ramps and platforms. Hydraulic cylinders and cable systems have typically been used for this application. Screw jacks provide a more reliable and safe operational system than hydraulic cylinders. The project gives design engineers a safe and reliable means of addressing tidal fluctuations with the use of screw jacks for movement over large distances. | |
