2001 Awards

January 17, 2002

State Silver Award: Pacific Avenue overcrossing, Everett

Engineer: HWA GeoSciences
Owner: City of Everett
Description: The project involved geotechnical design and construction monitoring services for a crossing over the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe rail line along Pacific Avenue in Everett. Rail traffic had caused congestion on Pacific and surrounding streets.

The overcrossing consists of a 750-foot long, post-tensioned, reinforced concrete bridge. The main span is 78 feet long, with a 62-foot-wide road section and 8-foot-wide sidewalk and guardrails. The road provides two travel lanes in each direction and a center left-turn lane.

Soil conditions were logged to verify that dense bearing soils were encountered at the anticipated depths and that shaft excavations were sufficiently cleaned prior to placing concrete. A smooth foundation construction process contributed to successful completion of the project on schedule and under budget.
