2001 Awards

January 17, 2002

National Silver Award: Railroad sanding tower, Cicero, Ill.

Engineer: Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
General Contractors: Graycor Industrial Contractors
Owner: Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad Co.
Description: BNSF retained Kennedy/Jenks to study, revise and implement a design to improve the aging, inefficient fueling facility at the Cicero, Ill., railroad yard. Cleaning up a fuel spill costs about 1,000 times as much as purchasing fuel, and BNSF wanted a design that would minimize the potential for any fuel or oil leaks.

The redesigned system saves substantial cleanup costs and protects the environment by capturing and properly disposing of spilled fuel. Kennedy/Jenks also designed a new, safer, pulse-flow pneumatic sand-dispensing system that uses non-proprietary tanks and components.

The entire fueling and sanding service operation is controlled by a supervisory control and data acquisition system that provides the staff with versatile monitoring capabilities, better system control, continuous data acquisition and automatic locomotive fueling and sanding operations.
