Fourteen construction projects received recognition at the 2000 Washington Aggregates & Concrete Association Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards held May 18 at the Bellevue Hyatt Regency Hotel.
The projects won in eight categories, with a tie for the municipal/commercial concrete paving award and decorative paving.
The 42 entries were evaluated on several points, including creativity of structural and architectural design using concrete to achieve design objectives; concrete’s contribution to construction efficiency, speed and economics; effective incorporation of concrete into the surrounding environment; overall project aesthetics; and unique solutions provided by concrete design construction.
From the category winners, the "Grand Award" winner was chosen based on the project that best uses concrete as a primary building material. The decision was a tough one, and jury members wrangled between several of the category winners for the Grand Award before handing the honor to the N.W. 41 St. industrial building in Ballard.
