Builders of public construction projects in Washington are keeping busy as the baby boom "echo" continues to be reflected in the projects for 1998 - nine of those listed involved schools.

To be eligible for the list, projects had to be awarded during 1998 on a low-bid basis.
This year, the Journal's special section has been expanded to include profiles on some of the top alternative bid projects that were under construction in 1998.
Also, a public-private project - the redevelopment of Holly Park in Seattle - was included.
Alternative bidding has become a popular construction method for big projects. It is usually carried out through the general contractor/construction manager and design/build methods.
To date, the state's Alternative Public Works Methods Oversight Committee has identified over 40 projects that are finished or in the planning or construction phases that use alternative bidding. The total value of the alternative bid projects is over $2.1 billion.
